#popupshu

Shu Restaurant is what you get when a guy from the Sichuan province in China comes to Melbourne and decides to follow his heart and passion. A visual merchandiser with an interest in fashion, Shu Liu may have left that life behind to put all his efforts into opening a restaurant, but since 2012 he has been planning a series of intimate dining experiences and we were privileged to collaborate with him on this, his very first. Called #popupshu it indulges Shu's love of dinner parties and hosting people not only in the restaurant but also his home. It's about bringing together the food of his childhood and presenting it in a way that is exciting and engaging yet still honest and fundamentally tasty. The food was paired with quality beverages including beautiful wine from The Limestone Coast in South Australia, small batch craft gin from the Mornington Peninsula and premium organic soft drinks.

Hosted in a hidden warehouse not far from the restaurant in Collingwood, diners were treated to a Sichuan inspired degustation using quality produce in a space that was decorated by Shu himself. From the tables to the seating, the music to the lighting, everything was planned and executed to perfection in what was essentially an exercise in design, all there to frame the focal point, his food. This adventure is not only about Shu celebrating where he comes from, but also a salute to his mother and father who have nurtured, supported and inspired him on the journey so far. Who knows where he'll pop up next, but it doesn't really matter because we'll be there with a drink in one hand and chopsticks in the other.
