Radio Mexico
Mexican food hit Melbourne hard a few years ago and the humble taco now appears on menus everywhere. These bite sized eats that can be filled with anything from battered fish to pulled pork and even tofu have become a favourite snack to devour with cocktails and beers. One such venue leading the charge was
Owner Adele Arkell is is one of the most passionate hospitality professionals we have encountered, with a true love of Mexico and all that comes with it, including a weakness for tequila and mezcal. This uniquely crafted spirit distilled from the blue agave is finally gaining popularity in Australia as people appreciate its cultural significance and the effort that goes into its production. Imports from artisan distilleries are now becoming widely available and Adele proudly stocks them amongst her impressive range. Margaritas are massive here, with 2 for 1 Margarita Mondays a popular way to start the week and tequila flights for the real aficionados or those wanting to learn a little more. If you decide to stay in and don't have your own bartender on hand, make sure you order a Litre Margarita as part of the takeaway feast and enjoy a bit of the action at home. Radio Mexico also infuse their own tequilas with ingredients like habaneros and jalapeños which are used for various inspired cocktails on the menu. Those who prefer spirits like gin, vodka, rum or whiskey are well taken care of and there is a nice little wine list too. Mexican beers are of course available as well as local craft brews in both bottles and on tap and you can either enjoy your drinks up at the bar or at a table either with or without food. It's also worth mentioning the room upstairs called Esmeralda in case you're looking for a venue to have a stand up cocktail party or private dining experience.
Radio Mexico is one of those places we love because it's not just somewhere to eat or drink. From the moment you walk in you just know you'll have a complete experience. Maybe you've been to Mexico and want to relive the memories like owner Adele, or maybe you just love authentic Mexican food. You could be a tequila freak and want another place to get your fix, or possibly you're a little tentative about the spirit and want to see what all the fuss is about. Regardless, this establishment has made its mark on St Kilda and if we're lucky Radio Mexico will still be here in another five years doing what they do best and making people extremely happy.
