Francesca's Bar
Every suburb has its local, the place where you can hang out and feel comfortable to turn up in whatever you happen to be wearing and not feel like you're going to stand out. Lucky for the locals of Northcote that they have Francesca's Bar. Quality drinks, friendly service and most importantly no pretension, because why do you have to dress in a suit to drink a martini?
Open since 2014, the bar is named after owner Ben Mathieson's cousin Francesca who died tragically at a young age and this was his way of keeping her memory alive, with a feature cocktail on the list called Forget Me Not to ensure she also lives on in spirit. Beer drinkers have a great choice of tapped and bottled brews and Ben has curated a lovely little Australian wine list to make sure everyone is catered for. If you're hungry, choose a pizza off the menu made by the experts a few doors down at Pizza e Vino, otherwise bring in whatever you feel like from one of the awesome eateries that surround the bar. Open until late every night, Happy Hour goes from 5pm - 8pm Monday to Friday and the bar hosts regular events like their monthly Queer party called Fri-Yay, with various DJs and bands also playing their tunes here on weekdays and weekends. If that's not enough there's even a table tennis table which gets a serious workout on a Sunday afternoon, so you may want to brush up on your skills before you come down.
It's interesting that Francesca, a Latin name meaning 'Free', should represent not only a beautiful girl who shall remain forever young, but also a bar that is casual, relaxed and so welcoming. Whether you're out in the courtyard, sitting at the bar or in one of the booths, you'll always get looked after, possibly with a little cheekiness and always a smile. Most importantly though, just turn up ready to have a good time and always feel free to be yourself at Francesca's.
