Bad Frankie.
We all have that mate, you know, the one your mum says you shouldn't be friends with. For us it's the guy who lives in Fitzroy in a little side street, pretty much only eats jaffles and has the biggest stash of Aussie craft spirits that would set your grandad's Kingswood on fire and probably half the neighbourhood with the flick of a lighter. His name is Bad Frankie and we love him!
Owned and run by Sebastian Costello, the bar is named after Van Diemen's Land Governor, John Franklin who outlawed small pot stills in the 1800s. This was the end of the boutique distillery industry in Tasmania and then across Australia. In 1992 Bill Lark from Lark Distillery overturned the law and received the country’s first small batch distilling licence. What Sebastian has done is source local craft distillers around the country and celebrate their beautiful products in some stunningly creative cocktails with a real native twist. The menu pretty much consists of delicious jaffles made to order, with the piece-de-resistance being the Lamington featured at the end of our video.
Enough said, go tell your mum you're going to visit Frankie, he's really not that bad, unless he gives you too much to drink and she finds you in the backyard swinging off the Hill's Hoist.
